Low-income cancer patients in Maricopa County will have increased access to comprehensive cancer care, including essential mental health support, thanks to a $35,000 grant Thunderbirds Charities awarded to Cancer Support Community Arizona.
The grant will support CSCAZ’s Cancer Resource Navigator Program, which was created to address cancer disparities and improve health equity for two years, according to a press release.
“Unfortunately, disparities in the effectiveness of cancer treatment remain a harsh reality,” said Julie Dunnigan, CEO of CSCAZ.
“Underinsured and uninsured cancer patients often struggle to access the care they need, while those with comprehensive insurance typically benefit from early detection and consistent, advanced medical intervention.
Barriers to accessing physical and mental health services disproportionately affect low-income individuals, leading to higher fatality rates for treatable cancers directly linked to income and insurance gaps.”
CSCAZ’s Cancer Resource Navigator program provides low-income clients with advocacy, resource navigation, and a direct assistance fund to support crucial expenses beyond a family’s financial means.
The program’s Navigators provide one-on-one navigation services and emotional support to patients, their families, and caregivers.
