UPDATE: These numbers are as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6

Phoenix hosted a City Council election today to elect a mayor and four members of City Council representing four municipal legislative districts found part of the city of Phoenix.

The race for mayor, who serves at-large over the eight municipal districts, features incumbent Mayor Kate Gallego and challenger Matt Evans.

Ms. Gallego is the second woman in Phoenix history to be elected to the station of mayor and is one of the youngest ‘big city’ mayors in the nation. Ms. Gallego graduated from Harvard and holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.

Mr. Evans, who is challenging Ms. Gallego for the station of Phoenix mayor, is a senior software developer and says it is time for a change at Phoenix City Hall.

Ms. Gallego appears to be headed to re-election as initial results provided she received 227,667 votes or 62.65% of the 403,041 ballot cast meanwhile Mr. Evans received 135,721 or 37.35% of ballots cast.

With the expected 2.1 million voter turnout, it is expected that approximately 700,000 ballots will be left to tabulate in the coming days, Maricopa County Election officials say.

The city of Phoenix is divided into 8 municipal districts whereas members of Phoenix City Council serve four-year terms. For this election cycle, the elected representatives of these districts are up for grabs:

  • District 1
  • District 3
  • District 5
  • District 7

Phoenix City Council last September voted unanimously to accept a wide range of district boundary shifts to bring the eight City Council districts within reasonable bounds of population deviations defined by the local Charter, which serves like a local constitution for the municipality.

The new district boundaries have been in effect since January. Unofficial results show the follow results:

Ann O’Brien, who was running unchallenged in District 1 received 31,388 votes.

In District 3 there were two candidates, Councilwoman Debra Stark who received 28,453 votes and Ayensa Millan who received 16,206 votes.

In District 5 there were two candidates, Councilwoman Betty Guardado who received 14,234 votes and J.J. Martinez who received 8,922 votes.

Earlier this year, Phoenix Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari vacated her District 7 seat to pursue a seat in United States Congress this November as Phoenix City Council last April appointed Carlos Galindo-Elvira to fill the District 7.

Of Note: Unofficial results show Ms. Ansari has been elected to the United States Congress.

District 7 features two races — one to finish the vacated seat left by the departure of Ms. Ansari and the other part of the routine election cycle.
