Local and out-of-town visitors alike may soon begin to see repairs underway along the Indian Bend Wash between Thomas and Mckellips roads as Scottsdale City Council recently gave the go-ahead to begin repairs at Vista Del Camino Park.

Scottsdale City Council at its last meeting of May approved in unanimous fashion a pre-construction contract — known within municipal hallways as “construction manager at-risk” — in the amount of $148,064.46 with Valley Rain Construction Corp. to begin the lake and irrigation repairs in and around the Indian Bend Wash.

Vista Del Camino Park is at 7700 E. Roosevelt St. in Scottsdale.

“This project will make much needed repairs to the lakes in the Indian Bend Wash between Thomas and McKellips roads,” said Scottsdale Public Works Director Dan Work in his report to City Council.

“The Indian Bend Wash includes many park amenities such as playgrounds, trails, bicycle routes, fishing lakes, sports fields, disc golf course, skate park and an aquatic center. Many of these activities rely on irrigation water from the lakes, or the lakes themselves.”

A part of the November 2019 voter-approved capital improvement bond projects, city officials contend the lake system is showing signs of aging. Those observations include:

  • Existing vegetation has rooted into the lake puncturing the existing clay liners;
  • The lake edges are eroding causing incompatible conditions adjacent to the multi-use paths;
  • The irrigation systems are outdated, undersized and perform inadequately; and
  • The existing connector channel system between park lakes is open and contains eroded banks.

In November 2019, Scottsdale’s voters approved three bond questions of which the Vista Del Camino repairs satisfy are a part of question No. 1, city officials say. Specifically, question No. 1 contained project 23, which is to repair lakes and irrigation at Vista del Camino Park in the Indian Bend Wash.
