Scottsdale Community College, in partnership with the city of Scottsdale and WestWorld, held a groundbreaking for a permanent facility for the college’s equine science program at the WestWorld campus.

The new facility will provide students access to the equine venue and expand workforce training opportunities, according to a press release.
“Today’s groundbreaking represents years of vision and collaboration,” Dr. Eric Leshinskie, president of Scottsdale Community College, said. “We’re investing in our students, the industry, and local community, and we’re proud to continue Scottsdale’s long tradition of equine excellence.”

The 22,000-square-foot facility will include 10 horse stalls, two round pens, a hay shed, an equipment shed and a dedicated farrier station designed to support hands-on training.

“WestWorld has long been a destination for premier equestrian events, and this partnership with Scottsdale Community College strengthens that legacy while investing in the future of Arizona’s equine industry,” Greg Caton, Scottsdale city manager, said. “This new facility creates meaningful opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in a world-class setting while supporting workforce development, education and economic vitality in our community.”
According to a 2026 report by the American Horse Council, the national equine industry contributes $177 billion and 2.2 million jobs to the U.S. economy, including sectors such as racing, recreation, competition, traditional work horses, equine-assisted services and rescues.

“This move allows us to expand our program, strengthen workforce preparation, and create more opportunities for students,” Jay Clements, equine science program director at Scottsdale Community College, said. “Being located at WestWorld gives our students better access, better scheduling, and better opportunities to gain experience alongside the industry’s top names and events.”

A 2025 University of Arizona report estimated the statewide economic impact of horse racing at $294 million annually.
Scottsdale Community College’s equine science program has operated for more than 40 years, combining coursework with hands-on experience. Graduates pursue careers in areas such as stable management, veterinary assisting, training, journalism, photography and education.

The program previously relied on multiple locations for instruction. The new WestWorld facility will centralize training for students and faculty.
The program has also added an equine massage therapy certification, designed to address demand for specialized skills in the industry as equine competitions expand.
