The World Literacy Foundation is announcing Lindsey Roman as a World Literacy Foundation Youth Ambassador for 2024.
Lindsay will serve as a local advocate to increase education and community awareness about the importance of reading and writing to lift literacy rates in Phoenix, according to a press release.
Ms. Roman’s appointment as a World Literacy Foundation Youth Ambassador for 2024 is not just a local initiative as she will be joining a global group of young people aged 15-25 from 40 countries, all united in their mission to improve literacy outcomes for disadvantaged children struggling to read.
Ms. Roman, a 24-year-old family literacy advocate from Arizona, is an associate product manager for a conversational AI company.
After moving to Arizona, Ms. Roman was heartbroken to learn that only 40% of students in the state read at grade level. Understanding the profound impact of low literacy on individuals and society, she has dedicated herself to improving literacy rates, starting with family literacy.
The World Literacy Foundation, a leading international literacy nonprofit, is on a mission to eradicate illiteracy by 2024. The urgency of this mission is underscored by the fact that currently, 770 million people can’t read a single word, and 2 billion people struggle to read a sentence.
In low-income homes, on average, 72% of children struggle to read. The lifelong social and economic impact of illiteracy on a young person is a stark reality that the World Literacy Foundation is determined to change.
