Tempe hosts March 12 primary election through all-mail ballot

The city of Tempe hosted its primary election Tuesday, March 12, where local voters decide — by mail — the election of mayor, three members of Tempe City Council, along with ratification of the municipality’s General Plan.
According to the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, there are 84,549 registered voters in Tempe. A total of 21,459 have been tallied so far, for a 25.38% turnout, results show.
The Maricopa County Elections Department released its preliminary, unofficial results about 8 p.m. last night. Those result are:
Tempe mayoral race:
- Corey Woods – 16,850 votes (94.32%)
- Write-in – 1,014 (5.68%)
Tempe City Council race:
- Nikki Amberg – 11,578 votes (21.62%)
- Doreen Garlid – 13,204 votes (24.45%)
- Randy Keating – 12,030 votes (22.27%)
- David Lucier – 8,369 votes (15.49%)
- Hugo Tapia – 8,359 votes (15.48%)
- Write-in – 472 (.87%)
Proposition 478 [General Plan]:
Yes – 11,902 votes (61.41%)
No – 7,480 votes (38.59%)
Final unofficial results will be released as received from Maricopa County Elections later in the week from the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office, HERE.
The canvass of the vote, which is the City Council’s official acceptance of the results, is tentatively scheduled for the March 21 City Council meeting.
Members of City Council elected will be sworn-in during the July 1 regular meeting, city officials tell the Digital Free Press.
