A locally made horror film is heading to major streaming platforms as Scottsdale writer and director Luca Patruno prepares to release “The Vindicator” on Dec. 2 on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, where audiences can rent or purchase the film.

The horror thriller is Patruno’s first feature film and reflects the work of an award-winning filmmaker who began his creative journey at Scottsdale Community College before earning a screenwriting degree at Chapman University, according to a press release.

“The Vindicator” follows the hosts of a true-crime podcast who travel to rural Arizona to cover what they believe will be the final chapter of the nation’s most elusive serial killer.

When their live broadcast is interrupted by a mysterious voice claiming to be the murderer, the trio is pulled into psychological tests that challenge their identities, loyalty and the personas they’ve built for their audience. The 90-minute film is not rated but contains violence, strong language and depictions of self-harm.

When discussing the origins of the film’s concept, Mr. Patruno said:

“Created during the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Vindicator grew out of what we were all experiencing. Everyone was consuming true crime, and I became fascinated by what happens when that obsession bleeds into real life. I wanted to explore the moment when entertainment crosses the line into danger. That collision became the foundation of the story. Saw inspired the film’s intense game-like sequences, while The Strangers influenced the psychological tension that drives the narrative.”

Filmed in Arizona at Sage Mountain Equestrian Center in North Scottsdale and 1Take Studios in Tempe, “The Vindicator” showcases the state’s growing independent film community. More than 80% of the cast and crew are Arizona-based, giving the production a strong local footprint and highlighting the depth of filmmaking talent in the region.

“Arizona shaped my earliest creative experiences, so filming locally and using local talent was important to me. Our cast and crew brought an intensity and dedication that elevated every moment on screen, and I am so proud of everyone who helped bring this project to life. It wasn’t easy.

The struggles come faster than the successes, but as long as you don’t give up, the effort will pay off in ways you never expected,” Mr. Patruno added.
