Nearly one century ago, people from around the country came to Phoenix looking for a cure for respiratory ills, mainly tuberculosis. The journey was often long and demanding, and many were left with nothing more than hope.
In 1927, John C. and Helen Lincoln formed Desert Mission to provide much needed support to the most vulnerable in their community, expanding the location in 1931 to include the area’s first medical clinic and emergency station, thanks in part to the support of the Lincolns.
Jump ahead to Oct. 1, 2013, when the John C. Lincoln Health Network merged with Scottsdale Healthcare to form HonorHealth, a healthcare system that has grown to include six acute care hospitals, hundreds of primary, specialty, urgent care and outpatient facilities, a research institute, a charitable foundation, a military partnership program and various community services still operating under the original Desert Mission moniker.
HonorHealth is the largest employer in Scottsdale and the eighth largest in the state with more than 14,000 team members and 3,600 affiliated physicians.
But it’s not about being the biggest, it’s about being the best and constantly exceeding expectations through a culture of excellence. One of those ways is by earning a Magnet designation, the gold standard for nursing care worldwide. Only 11 hospitals in Arizona have earned this distinction, and HonorHealth operates five of them. HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center also recently received their fifth consecutive designation, an achievement shared with only 48 other hospitals in the U.S.
The HonorHealth Research Institute, established in 2005, has become an international destination for treatments not available elsewhere, giving patients access to tomorrow’s cures today. By supporting these ground-breaking clinical trials, HonorHealth provides new hope for a better quality of life.

It’s no secret that transforming healthcare in Arizona requires responsible growth and operational excellence. But to truly transform this industry, HonorHealth’s focus starts before patients walk through their doors, inspiring and empowering communities to live healthy.
That’s why they are the primary sponsor of Blue Zones Project Scottsdale, a community-wide well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier where people live, work, learn and play.
“We understand our communities need more than just high-quality healthcare to be truly healthy,” says Todd LaPorte, CEO of HonorHealth. “Taking part in the global movement proven to improve health and well-being with other like-minded organizations further solidifies our commitment to go beyond the traditional expectations of a healthcare system, furthering our mission to improve the health and well-being of those we serve.”
HonorHealth also understands that providing the best care for the community starts with ensuring the health and well-being of its most valuable asset: people. By offering a wide-ranging compensation program, an Employee Crisis Fund to help those who find themselves in a financial crisis, a robust diversity, equity, and inclusion program, a flourishing Ambassador Movement and leadership development programs, the executive team is ensuring team members play an active role in how HonorHealth moves forward as an organization.
HonorHealth is grateful to have incredible support from community leaders and donors who see the value in a locally owned, nonprofit health system committed to providing personalized, connected, high-quality care with a worthy mission.
Generations of patients, physicians, team members and volunteers consider HonorHealth to be their hometown hospital. HonorHealth will continue to be there for patients, families and the entire community by delivering exceptional care, always striving for Honor Above All.
