HonorHealth participated in an exercise Tuesday, Feb. 4, at HonorHealth Mountain Vista Medical Center (MVMC) in Mesa as part of ongoing emergency preparedness training executed by the HonorHealth Emergency Management team. The exercise created a scenario of mass casualties following a staged aircraft incident at Mesa Gateway Airport, according to HonorHealth officials.
The medical center is located at 1301 S. Crismon Road in Mesa.
The simulated emergency involved HonorHealth personnel, the Superstition Fire Department, AMR EMS, and other external agencies. A little after 9 a.m., the Emergency Department was alerted that 15 simulated patients were being transported, and an incident command was set up. Within 30 minutes, patients began arriving by ambulance for triage and treatment.
This exercise aimed to test and enhance MVMC’s capabilities in responding to a surge event by familiarizing staff with the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) and documentation and organizing Emergency Department (ED) incident command according to HonorHealth methodologies. This exercise included collaboration with community partners to conduct external triage operations, situational awareness, and internal communications, officials say.
Officials say full-scale exercises are staged regularly across the HonorHealth system to enhance hospital team members’ readiness and preparedness for real-world surge events.
