Maricopa Community Colleges is reporting South Mountain Community College’s Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences program has received approval from the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners for the Licensed Addiction Counselor Technician.
This means students who began the bachelor’s degree program in Fall 2023 or later and complete the approved coursework will meet the educational requirements for the LACT licensure, according to a press release.
“This accomplishment underscores South Mountain’s commitment to aligning education with industry standards and preparing students for impactful careers,” said Dr. Steven R. Gonzales, Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor. “AzBBHE approval is another way we solidify our program’s credibility, as rigorous state curriculum, ethical, and professional standards must be met. This approval would not have been possible without the efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff.”
What is an LACT license?
An entry-level state licensure in Arizona and regulated by the AzBBHE, the LACT credential allows professionals to work under the supervision of a licensed addiction counselor to gain hands-on experience and develop essential skills to support individuals struggling with substance use disorders. Additionally, the license serves as a pathway to advanced credentials, such as a Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor or Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated 48,900 openings for substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors are projected annually over the next decade, driven primarily by workforce transitions and retirements. Employment in this field is expected to grow 19% from 2023 to 2033, significantly faster than the average for all occupations.
“The LACT is a win-win for both employers and our students,” said Veronica Hipolito, SMCC president. “Employers benefit from a more qualified workforce, and our students can pursue higher-salary positions. By earning the LACT approval, SMCC underscores its commitment to aligning our educational offerings with industry standards in order to prepare students for meaningful and impactful careers.”
This spring, SMCC celebrated 35 graduates of the program. Last year, the college made history by becoming one of the first community colleges in the state to confer bachelor’s degrees. Today, the bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Sciences has nearly 1,000 students enrolled.
