Scottsdale Salutes seeks veteran volunteers for Old Town displays

Scottsdale this November is once again paying tribute to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces.
As part of its annual Scottsdale Salutes program, light pole banners featuring local veterans and military service members will be displayed in Old Town for two weeks in November.
“This program is a way for our city to publicly thank and recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans, active-duty military, National Guard members and reservists,” Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega said in a prepared statement. “They are valued members of our community, and we are honored to salute them.”
All veterans, active-duty service members, and members of the National Guard and reserves who live in Scottsdale or have substantial ties to the community are eligible for nomination, officials at City Hall tell the Digital Free Press.
Nominations can be submitted at ScottsdaleAZ.gov by searching “Scottsdale Salutes” until Friday, Sept. 27. Those selected will be honored at a special community reception in November.
The Scottsdale Salutes recognition program was initiated by the Scottsdale Veterans Advisory Commission, a group of seven residents appointed by the City Council to advise on veterans’ issues and raise awareness of veterans’ contributions within the community.
This year, the commission expanded eligibility for the Scottsdale Salutes program to honor veterans whose connection to Scottsdale is through their work. The updated criteria now include a section for those who “demonstrate a strong connection to the Scottsdale community by working in Scottsdale for a substantial period (a minimum of five years).”
“We are proud to continue this tradition of honoring service members through the Scottsdale Salutes program,” said Land Anderson, chair of the Veterans Advisory Commission. “Their bravery and dedication deserve to be recognized and celebrated.”
