When people hear “Men’s Arts Council,” it garners a wide array of reactions. Some people think we’re a social club. Others assume we only support male artists and creators, or that the council is merely a hobby.

As President of the Men’s Arts Council, I assure you our mission goes much deeper.  Men support art not only because of the social benefits, but also because it is essential: to community, to leadership, and to the full expression of who we are. Our work funds exhibits and fosters art education at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Art has always shaped societies. Long before cities were measured by GDP or skyline, they were defined by what they built, painted, performed, and preserved. Supporting art is not passive appreciation, it is stewardship of culture.  In a time when public discourse often fractures along lines of politics or identity, art offers a shared language, one that invites reflection rather than reaction.

Men, in particular, have a responsibility to engage, an obligation to invest in spaces that elevate empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. Supporting the arts is one way we can help balance the scales, by ensuring that diverse voices, histories, and perspectives are not only displayed, but sustained. For many of us, involvement in the arts began as curiosity and became conviction. We discovered that museums are not static warehouses of objects, but living institutions. They are classrooms without walls, civic gathering places, and forums for dialogue.

At the Phoenix Art Museum, the Men’s Arts Council is committed to funding and supporting exhibitions that bring global perspectives to the Valley, educational programs that serve students across Maricopa County, and acquisitions that ensure the collection reflects both excellence and inclusion. We show up because art does not survive on applause alone; it survives on longstanding dedication and investment.

Men support art because it makes us better leaders. Art trains the eye to see nuance and the mind to sit with complexity. It asks us to listen before judging and to consider experiences beyond our own. A man who supports the arts is practicing the discipline of attention, something increasingly rare and increasingly valuable.

Men support art because when we gather around a shared purpose: learning, supporting, advocating—we normalize the idea that art matters to everyone. In Phoenix, a city defined by rapid growth and reinvention, this matters even more. Art grounds us. It reminds us that progress is not only measured in cranes and construction, but in creativity and connection. A thriving arts ecosystem attracts talent, fuels innovation, and strengthens the social fabric of our region.

Men support art because we want children to inherit more than prosperity, we want them to inherit perspective. And we support it because leadership is not only about building the future; it is about preserving the soul of the present, while remembering the past.

The Men’s Arts Council believes it deserves champions. We are proud to be among them. And we ask that if you too are a man of conviction and honor, you join us. Every August we recruit new members, but it’s never too early to express interest.
