The Phoenix VA Health Care System has begun a series of infrastructure upgrades intended to support safe and effective patient care.
The work is part of $4.8 billion in national Department of Veterans Affairs spending to modernize and repair health care facilities in fiscal year 2026 through the Veterans Health Administration’s Non‑Recurring Maintenance program, according to a press release.
Phoenix VA projects planned for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 include:
• Renovation and expansion of the laboratory
• Renovation and modernization of the operating suite
• Renovation of pharmacy space
• Modernization or replacement of HVAC units in multiple buildings
• Renovation of the infusion clinic
“Improved facilities, equipment and infrastructure mean better care for our growing population of Veterans,” said Elijah Ditter, executive director of the Phoenix VA. “Better care for Veterans is our goal, and these funds will enable us to achieve just that.”
According to the VA, these projects are part of broader initiatives underway during the current administration. Since Jan. 20, 2025, the department reports it has:
- • Reduced by 60% the number of Veterans waiting for VA benefits
- • Eliminated the backlog of Veteran families waiting for VA health care
- • Processed three million disability claims during fiscal year 2025
- • Opened 25 new health care clinics nationwide
- • Offered more than 1.9 million appointments outside normal operating hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends
