Family Promise of Greater Phoenix announced that CEO Ted Taylor retired July 10 following 16 years leading the nonprofit organization that serves families with children experiencing homelessness. Beginning July 13, Taylor assumed the role of CEO emeritus and will assist with the leadership transition through Dec. 31.
During his tenure, Family Promise of Greater Phoenix expanded from serving 30 families annually to more than 700 families each year. Since 2010, the organization has provided shelter and support services to more than 2,400 Valley families. The organization also grew its network of faith-based partners from 13 to 44 congregations and expanded from one program to five programs focused on preventing and ending family homelessness, according to a press release.
“I did not choose this work so much as I was called to it, and it has been the honor of my life to serve,” Ted Taylor, outgoing CEO of Family Promise of Greater Phoenix, said. “Family Promise remains one of the most effective, community-powered models I’ve seen, graduating families into sustainable housing at a fraction of the cost of traditional shelters, and preventing first-time homelessness whenever possible. The organization is in great hands with its staff, volunteers, and network of supporters, and I look forward to welcoming our new leadership soon.”
Among Mr. Taylor’s accomplishments was the opening of Arizona’s first family shelter to welcome pets in 2012. The initiative later led to a partnership with PetSmart to expand pet-friendly shelter spaces within Family Promise affiliates nationwide.
Mr. Taylor also helped lead development of Legacy Village, described by the organization as Arizona’s first container village. The transitional housing community was built debt-free and is located in an area with high eviction rates. Family Promise of Greater Phoenix was also recognized as a Top 10 affiliate nationally in 2024 and 2025 among 200 independent Family Promise affiliates.
“Ted’s 16 years of service have been an extraordinary gift to the families of greater Phoenix and to the entire Family Promise community,” Tim McGough, board chair, said. “His leadership has transformed this organization and set a standard of excellence that will guide us forward. We are committed to a smooth and thoughtful transition and look forward to announcing new leadership in the near future.”
Family Promise of Greater Phoenix said it remains focused on its mission of preventing and ending family homelessness through its five core programs: diversion, prevention, shelter, housing and stabilization. The organization said it expects to announce a new CEO in the coming weeks.
