Arizona Opera will bring the classic tale of “Puss in Boots” to the stage with “El Gato con Botas,” a family-oriented opera by Spanish composer Xavier Montsalvatge, in November.
The production will be presented Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8, in Phoenix and Saturday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 15, in Tucson, according to a press release. It will feature all five singers in the 2026-27 Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio.
Based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault, “El Gato con Botas” follows a clever cat who uses his wit and resourcefulness to transform the fortunes of his humble master. The one-act opera incorporates Spanish rhythms, music and theatrical elements.
“El Gato con Botas is a wonderful opportunity for audiences to experience the remarkable talent of our Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio artists,” Brian DeMaris, Arizona Opera general director, said. “This production allows all five singers to work together as a professional ensemble while giving our audiences an intimate look at artists who are at the beginning of what we hope will be important careers. And because it’s a familiar story told through beautiful Spanish music, it’s a terrific way for families and newcomers to experience opera together.”
The production is part of Arizona Opera’s 2026-27 Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio, which has returned to a full-season program after operating as a half-season program for the previous two years.
The studio provides emerging artists with yearlong opportunities for performance, professional coaching, artistic development and community engagement. Studio artists work alongside established singers, conductors, directors and other opera professionals while gaining experience intended to help them transition from academic training to professional careers.
