The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board has approved the renaming of César Chávez Park and César Chávez Community Center to Águila Park and Águila Community Center.
The action follows direction from the Phoenix City Council earlier this year to rename all city streets and facilities previously named after César Chávez.
In March 2026, the Parks and Recreation Board directed the Parks and Recreation Department to begin the formal renaming process. To gather community input, the department launched a public survey in May featuring six proposed names: Laveen, Águila, Holstein Heritage, Arizona Sunset, Desert Oasis and Farmworkers.
Residents also had the opportunity to submit additional name suggestions for consideration. The survey closed June 15, and Águila received the most community support, according to a press release.
After reviewing public feedback and staff analysis, the board voted to support the Parks and Recreation Department’s recommendation to rename the park and community center to Águila and move forward with the renaming process.
The next phase includes removing existing signage and memorabilia and installing new signage reflecting the updated names.
“We are grateful for the community’s engagement throughout this process,” Parks Department Director Martin Whitfield said. “Our parks and facilities belong to the people we serve, and community input is essential in ensuring they continue to reflect the identity and values of Phoenix residents.”
Águila Park and Águila Community Center are at 7835 S. 35th Ave. in Laveen.
