Better Piggies Rescue is asking for community support after the nonprofit’s rescue vehicle was recently totaled in an accident, leaving the sanctuary without a reliable way to transport pigs in need.
The North Valley-based animal rescue depends on its vehicle to respond to calls involving abandoned, injured or loose pigs referred by organizations such as the Arizona Humane Society, law enforcement agencies and the Arizona Department of Agriculture.
“When a call comes in, we need to be ready to move,” said Danielle Betterman, founder and director of Better Piggies Rescue. “A rescue vehicle is not a convenience for us. It is how we get to pigs when they need help. Without it, there are moments when we know an animal needs us, and we simply cannot get there the way we need to.”
Founded in 2017, Better Piggies Rescue currently cares for more than 210 rescued pigs, according to a press release. The organization is seeking donations to help purchase a dependable van or large SUV capable of safely transporting multiple large kennels.
The rescue says a suitable vehicle must have working air conditioning, a critical feature when transporting pigs during Arizona’s high summer temperatures. Rescue operations can involve multiple animals and often require climate-controlled transportation.
“Every rescue looks a little different,” Ms. Betterman said. “Sometimes it is one scared pig. Sometimes it is several. But every time, we need a safe way to bring them home.”
In addition to financial contributions, the organization is seeking assistance from dealerships, businesses, fleet operators and individuals who may be able to provide a suitable vehicle at a discounted nonprofit rate.
The sanctuary also plans to reopen to visitors in October with the return of guided tours and volunteer orientations following a summer closure to the public, according to a press release. The tours offer opportunities to learn more about the pigs living at the sanctuary and the daily care required to support rescued animals. Volunteer orientations are available for individuals interested in hands-on service opportunities.
