After helping lead Saguaro High School to a 4A state championship and one of the program’s most memorable seasons in recent history, senior catcher Alain Gomez-Gudiño has been named the 2025-26 Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year.

The honor recognizes the state’s top high school baseball player for excellence in athletics, academics and character, now in its 41st year, according to a press release.

For Mr. Gomez-Gudiño, the recognition follows a season that highlighted his impact in multiple areas of the game. The catcher helped lead the Sabercats to a 25-8 record and the 4A state championship. At the plate, he batted .455 with six home runs, 35 RBI and a 1.332 OPS. Behind the plate, he threw out 33.3% of attempted base stealers.

His performance earned him Arizona Baseball Coaches Association 4A Player of the Year honors, as well as MVP recognition in the 4A state championship game.

“Alain changes the game every time he steps on the field,” Saguaro Head Baseball Coach Gerald Laird said. “He’s the kind of player every coach hopes to have because he impacts winning in so many ways. His leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to excellence helped drive our state championship season, and no one is more deserving of this honor.”

The accolades extend beyond Arizona. Mr. Gomez-Gudiño is ranked the nation’s No. 46 overall prospect in the Class of 2026 by Perfect Game and the No. 224 overall draft prospect by Baseball America. He has signed a written letter of athletic aid to continue his baseball career at the University of South Carolina.

While his accomplishments on the field are notable, Mr. Gomez-Gudiño’s impact extends beyond baseball.
He has maintained a 3.47 GPA while balancing academics and athletics and has volunteered with the Scottsdale Miracle League, which provides children, teens and adults with disabilities and special health care needs the opportunity to play baseball.

“Alain embodies what we hope all student-athletes strive to become,” Saguaro Athletic Director and Assistant Principal David Abrams said. “He excels in competition, succeeds in the classroom, and gives back to his community. This award recognizes not only his talent but also the character and leadership he demonstrates every day.”

Mr. Gomez-Gudiño joins a group of Gatorade Player of the Year recipients across the country, including athletes, Olympians, coaches and leaders in a variety of fields.
