One Step Beyond Inc. has promoted Jeff Swanson to chief executive officer, naming a longtime organizational leader to oversee the nonprofit’s next phase of growth.

Swanson brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, development and community engagement to the role. He most recently served as executive director of administration at One Step Beyond, where he oversaw daily operations and worked to improve organizational efficiency.

Previously, he served as executive director of Arizona development and communications, leading fundraising efforts that supported the expansion and renovation of One Step Beyond campuses in Peoria, Surprise and Scottsdale.

Founded more than 20 years ago, One Step Beyond provides programs and services for adults with intellectual disabilities, serving more than 700 individuals and their families across campuses in Glendale, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale and Surprise, as well as locations in San Carlos and Redwood City, California, according to a press release.

“What makes One Step Beyond truly special is our dedication to people and our purpose,” Mr. Swanson said. “I am honored to step into this role and lead this next chapter of our mission alongside our participants, staff, families, volunteers and community partners. One Step Beyond will continue to create opportunities that don’t exist elsewhere and provide long-term solutions that empower individuals we serve to grow and thrive independently.”

As chief executive officer, Mr. Swanson will lead the organization’s continued expansion, including the development of Nikki’s Next Step, a residential initiative designed to address long-term housing needs for adults with intellectual disabilities. The initiative was created in response to challenges such as housing affordability, limited options, support needs and the aging of parents and caregivers.

The proposed 57-unit community in northern Glendale will offer ownership and lease options intended to support affordability and safety while keeping residents connected to services and a broader community. The project is expected to break ground in the coming years with a targeted opening in late 2027.

“Jeff has been instrumental in helping One Step Beyond grow and reach more individuals and families in meaningful ways,” said Mary Lou Micheaels, board chair of One Step Beyond Inc. “He leads with a clear focus on the people at the center of our mission and their potential, building strong relationships that create real opportunities for those we serve to find employment, achieve independence and develop essential life skills.”
