There is now signage alerting motorists they are nearing Old Town Scottsdale along Loop 101 at the Indian School Road exit within municipal bounds.

Following discussions with Mayor Dave Ortega, officials at City Hall tell the Digital Free Press, city staff members initiated a request on behalf of Old Town Scottsdale merchants, asking the Scottsdale Transportation and Streets Department to work with the Arizona Department of Transportation to replace wayfinding signage along Loop 101.

Since 2003 when Loop 101 was opened, signage at the Indian School Road exit directed drivers to “Downtown Scottsdale.”

But anyone who knows ‘The West’s most Western Town’ knows Old Town and downtown are two different parts of Scottsdale.

“Downtown is such a generic term, certainly not indicative of the historic original township, civic center core, arts and culture and shopping experiences which make Scottsdale a regional and international destination,” Mayor Ortega said in a press release.

City Hall officials report at Mayor Ortega’s request, Scottsdale transportation staff worked with ADOT officials on new signage that is now installed as traffic approaches the Indian School Road exit from the north and south.

The signs now read: Old Town Scottsdale.

“Our Old Town merchants, galleries and renown restaurants, museums, fabulous arts and cultural venues, and the Waterfront promenade leading to Scottsdale Fashion Square are easier to find now.” Mayor Ortega said in a prepared statement. “Old Town Scottsdale hospitality is unforgettable as locals and visitors enjoy shaded walkways and helpful, friendly merchants. Thanks to our transportation team and ADOT for making it happen expeditiously.”
