Stargazers can watch one of December’s major celestial events during the free Geminids Meteor Shower Watch Party from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at Four Peaks Park in Fountain Hills.

Presented by Night Sky Tourist in partnership with Experience Fountain Hills, the community event at Four Peaks Park, 14789 N. Del Cambre, will coincide with the peak of the Geminids meteor shower and include educational programming and telescope viewing, according to a press release.

Vicky Derksen, founder and owner of Night Sky Tourist, will discuss cultural perspectives on meteor showers and the science behind the Geminids. The meteor shower produces medium-speed meteors that can leave bright, lingering trails across the sky. Organizers expect minimal moon interference because the moon will be in a thin waxing crescent phase.

“This is a unique opportunity for community members of all ages to connect with the night sky and experience one of nature’s most impressive annual events,” Vicky Derksen, Night Sky Tourist founder and owner, said. “Whether you’re a longtime astronomy enthusiast or simply looking for a new experience, witnessing a meteor shower firsthand is both educational and awe-inspiring. Events like this help foster a deeper appreciation for our night skies and the incredible celestial events happening above us.”

The Geminids meteor shower can produce dozens of bright meteors per hour at its peak. Unlike many meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids are created by debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

In addition to meteor watching, attendees will have an opportunity to touch a meteorite and observe Jupiter and Saturn through telescopes.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for viewing on the grass and to use red flashlights. Organizers discourage white flashlights and smartphone lights because they can interfere with night vision. Swette Ice Cream will be on site offering hot chocolate and other treats.
