Firefighters spend their careers answering calls for help, but this September, Scottsdale Firefighter Charities will recognize those who answer a different kind of call: serving the community through leadership, public service and philanthropy.
The 27th annual Behind the Flames dinner, presented by HonorHealth, will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at Mastro’s City Hall in Scottsdale, bringing together supporters for Scottsdale Firefighter Charities’ signature fundraising event.
KTAR News radio host Jim Sharpe will emcee the program, which includes recognizing Scottsdale’s Firefighter of the Year, presenting the organization’s C.A.R.E. Awards, hearing from honorees and firefighters, and raising funds to support firefighters, their families and the community.
The event highlights community leaders from journalism, public service and local nonprofit organizations while raising money for charitable programs supported by Scottsdale Firefighter Charities, according to a press release.
This year’s C.A.R.E. Award honorees include Arizona sports journalist and radio personality Dan Bickley. Mr. Bickley is known for highlighting charitable causes, local individuals and organizations that contribute to the community. He has also been a supporter of first responders, frequently recognizing firefighters, police officers and other public servants for their service.
Also being honored is Jeremy Duda, a journalist and author of “Murder in the Fourth Estate,” which examines the murder of Arizona Republic journalist Don Bolles 50 years ago. The book has renewed interest in the case and its significance to journalism and public accountability while introducing a new generation of Arizona residents to a notable chapter in the state’s history.
Former Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigator George Weisz, now chair of the board of directors at Scottsdale Community Bank, is also receiving a C.A.R.E. Award. Mr. Weisz spent years investigating the Bolles case and seeking answers in one of Arizona’s most closely followed criminal investigations.
The fourth C.A.R.E. Award honoree is Melissa Schalles, executive director of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Association. Under Ms. Schalles’ leadership, the association has used the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show to support charitable causes, including Make-A-Wish Arizona, Scottsdale Community College Equine Services and Youth For Troops.
This year’s Scottsdale Firefighter of the Year award will be presented to Rey Igliane for his service and dedication to the Scottsdale Fire Department. Colleagues describe Mr. Igliane as a respected leader who demonstrates commitment to the department and the community he serves.
“Most people only see firefighters on what may be the worst day of their lives,” Scottsdale Firefighters Association President Sasha Weller said. “Behind the Flames lets us introduce the people behind the uniforms while recognizing community members who make Scottsdale stronger. Every ticket and sponsorship also helps us continue supporting firefighters, their families and our community.”
The evening begins with a sponsor reception from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Single tickets are $500, and table and sponsorship opportunities range from $2,000 to $5,000.
Proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorships support Scottsdale Firefighter Charities’ community giving efforts, including contributions to the EVIT Foundation, Scottsdale Community Partners/Human Services, Scottsdale Food Bank, Jobs for America’s Graduates, the city of Scottsdale Youth Development Program, Scottsdale Senior Center and Together Pink Network, among other organizations.
