Ballet Arizona has named J. David Smith its new philanthropy director, bringing a background in nonprofit fundraising, donor engagement and business leadership to the Valley’s professional ballet company.
Mr. Smith most recently served as chief development officer for Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona and previously held development leadership roles in the human services, animal welfare and nonprofit sectors, according to a press release.
“David’s passion for the arts, combined with his proven track record in philanthropy and community engagement, make him an exceptional fit for Ballet Arizona,” Ballet Arizona Executive Director Jami Kozemczak said. “His experience and dedication to connecting donors with meaningful causes will play an important role in advancing our mission and supporting the future of ballet in Arizona.”
Before transitioning to nonprofit leadership, Mr. Smith spent nearly two decades in retail banking, serving in leadership roles across metro Phoenix. His career included positions in branch management, quality assurance, information technology, and learning and development. His experience later included consulting work with financial institutions in Missouri, Minnesota and Illinois before he returned to the Valley.
Mr. Smith subsequently spent nearly 10 years as general manager of a commercial print shop. During his corporate and small-business career, he also served on the boards of several local nonprofit organizations, volunteered and chaired fundraising and gala committees.
Describing his move into philanthropy as his “third and favorite professional chapter,” Mr. Smith has held development leadership roles across several nonprofit sectors. His work has focused on building donor relationships and connecting donors with philanthropic causes.
A Valley native, Mr. Smith’s connection to the arts began at an early age. His mother performed as a violinist with The Phoenix Symphony for nearly three decades. Mr. Smith has remained a supporter of the arts, attending symphony, opera and ballet performances.
“I am honored to join Ballet Arizona and support an organization that enriches our community through the power of dance,” Mr. Smith said. “As a lifelong supporter of the arts, I look forward to connecting with donors and partners who share a passion for ensuring Ballet Arizona continues to thrive for generations to come.”
As philanthropy director, Mr. Smith will lead Ballet Arizona’s fundraising efforts, cultivate donor relationships and support the organization’s philanthropic initiatives.
