The Scottsdale Unified School District has announced the official opening of the Math and Science Academy at Mohave Middle School, expanding its STEM-focused programming to younger students.
The new academy builds on the foundation of the Math and Science Academy at Saguaro High School and is now accepting students, according to a press release.
The academy offers honors-level courses, hands-on learning, and early access to high school credits. Students will also have access to STEM labs, collaborative learning spaces, and career exploration through the “Design My Future” program, the release states.
“Now that the academy is up and running, we’re seeing our vision come to life,” said Paul Ferrero, principal of Mohave Middle School. “We’ve created a space where students can explore, innovate and thrive. Our goal has always been to provide hands-on, high-impact STEM experiences that support academic success and ignite a passion for future careers.”
Mr. Ferrero noted that the academy’s accelerated science classes can lead to high school credit, complementing the high school math credit already available to students.
The academy draws students from several SUSD elementary schools with specialized programs:
•Navajo Elementary School: A STEM Cognia-certified school with a focus on critical thinking and robotics.
•Kiva Elementary School: Home to SUSD’s Comprehensive Gifted Program, preparing students for advanced coursework.
•Pueblo Elementary School: Offers Spanish dual language immersion, contributing to the academic diversity of Mohave’s student body.
•The Math and Science Academy at Mohave is part of SUSD’s broader effort to expand access to high-quality STEM education across grade levels.
