The Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board has approved several leadership appointments affecting Cherokee Elementary School and Saguaro High School.
The board approved the appointments during a recent meeting as part of district leadership planning for the 2026–27 school year, according to a press release.
Brittany Walker named Cherokee Elementary School principal
Brittany Walker has been appointed principal of Cherokee Elementary School, effective July 1, 2026. Ms. Walker has 15 years of experience in education, including seven years as a principal, most recently serving as principal of Copper Ridge School in the district.
Ms. Walker is also a Cherokee Elementary parent, a role that district officials said provides familiarity with the school community.
“It is an absolute honor to serve as the new Principal of Cherokee Elementary,” Ms. Walker said. “Cherokee is a community I have chosen for my own children’s education, which makes this opportunity even more meaningful. I look forward to supporting students, staff, and families while continuing the school’s strong tradition of excellence.”
Matthew Georgia named Saguaro High School principal
Matthew Georgia has been named principal of Saguaro High School, effective July 1, 2026. Mr. Georgia has 23 years of experience in education, including 14 years in administrative roles.
Mr. Georgia serves as director of multi-tiered systems of support in the Phoenix Union High School District and previously served as principal of Champion Circle High School. His background also includes experience in special education as a teacher and department leader.
“I am honored to be named the new principal of Saguaro High School,” Mr. Georgia said. “It is a privilege to join a community known for excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. I look forward to building on Saguaro’s strong traditions while supporting every student in becoming their best self.”
Victor “Butch” Goncharoff anmed Saguaro head football coach
The Governing Board also approved Mr. Victor “Butch” Goncharoff as head football coach at Saguaro High School.
Mr. Goncharoff has recorded 206 career wins and 15 losses as a head coach and has led teams to multiple state championship appearances during his coaching career.
“The Saguaro Football Program has a storied tradition filled with great coaches and great players,” Mr. Goncharoff said. “I am honored to be part of that tradition. I am excited about the upcoming season and cannot wait to get started.”
Plans for a community meet‑the‑coach event will be announced at a later date.
“These leaders bring experience and a strong focus on student success,” Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel said. “We are excited to welcome them into their new roles and look forward to the contributions they will make to our schools and community.”
Current principals will remain in their roles through the end of the 2025–26 school year to support leadership transitions.
