Phoenix Children’s has received a $1 million commitment from Sundt Construction to support its Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

The five-year pledge will bring Sundt’s total support of Phoenix Children’s to more than $1.4 million since their partnership began in 2021. Sundt also serves as title sponsor of Big Dig for Kids, a construction industry fundraiser benefiting the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, which returns Saturday, Nov. 7, according to a press release.

“Sundt Construction has been an incredible partner to Phoenix Children’s, and this generous commitment will help us continue advancing care for children and families facing cancer and blood disorders,” Phoenix Children’s Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Special Events and Grant Philanthropy Tim Harrison said. “Their continued support allows our teams to pursue innovative treatments and research while providing the world-class care every child deserves.”

Phoenix Children’s recognized the commitment during a celebration Sept. 2 at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Thomas Campus. The event brought together leaders from Phoenix Children’s and Sundt Construction and included a patient story, commemorative video and ceremonial check presentation.

During the event, Phoenix Children’s patient Lilly shared her experience receiving care at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in October 2024. Following chemotherapy and surgery, Lilly returned to school and competitive dance.

“Lilly’s story is a reminder of what’s at stake every day at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. It’s why Sundt is deepening its commitment to Phoenix Children’s by providing another $1 million over five years to help the Center continue its work in treatment and research. Dave Crawford built something lasting when he started Big Dig for Kids, and our employee-owners are proud to keep it growing,” Sundt Construction President and CEO Cade Rowley said.

Big Dig for Kids was founded in 2016 by Dave Crawford, retired CEO of Sundt Construction, to support the American Cancer Society. Since the partnership with Phoenix Children’s began in 2021, the event has raised more than $5 million for pediatric cancer care, treatment and research. The annual event gives children an opportunity to operate heavy machinery, explore construction equipment and learn about the industry while raising money for pediatric cancer care.

The September celebration also recognized Mr. Crawford for his role in launching Big Dig for Kids and developing the partnership between Sundt and Phoenix Children’s. Mario Otto, M.D., of Phoenix Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, also spoke about how philanthropic contributions support patients, programs and advances in pediatric cancer care.
