Phoenix is launching the Green Stormwater Infrastructure Handbook to help residents save water, support local wildlife and decrease temperatures.
Available online in both English and Spanish, the handbook provides easy-to-follow tips for using Green Stormwater Infrastructure features to collect and use rainwater, according to a press release.
“Everything in this information-packed and highly-visual new handbook gives our residents and city an opportunity to benefit from GSI integration, all while embracing the beauty of our Sonoran Desert and honoring the wonder of this region,” said Tricia Balluff, environmental programs manager in the Office of Environmental Programs.
GSI methods, such as rain barrels, permeable surfaces and stormwater basins may help reduce localized flooding, improve local air and water quality and create cooler, greener spaces. Phoenix residents can use these methods not only to conserve water but also make their outdoor spaces more attractive and functional.
“The Green Stormwater Infrastructure Handbook gives our community simple ways to adopt water-saving solutions,” said Heather Finden, stormwater post-construction program manager in the Planning and Development Department. “Small changes at home can add up, making a big difference in how we manage stormwater and increase shade in our neighborhoods.”
The free 25-page handbook offers step-by-step guidance on designing and maintaining GSI features, including information on native plants, soil considerations, irrigation recommendations and permitting guidance.
