Thanks to a second grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Mesa officials are expecting to be provided an additional $85,000 to participants ages 15 to 24 for projects focusing on tackling Mesa’s climate goals

The program empowers young people to design, implement, and govern actionable climate solutions, Mesa officials report.

Mayor Mark Freeman lauds the effort pointing out the next generation of community leaders are leading the effort.

“It;s important for all of us to take care of our natural resources, which is key to everything we do in Mesa,” he said in a prepared statement. “We’re grateful for the support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and excited to work with the next generation of leaders to build a more sustainable future.”

Young people ages 15-24 who reside in and/or attend school in Mesa are encouraged to apply for up to $5,000 in funding to design and implement projects that address Mesas Climate Action Goals, which include heat mitigation, water stewardship, clean air and increasing Mesas tree canopy. Y

Youth can apply by March 28 for priority review with a final deadline of May 23.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund granted Mesa $50,000 in 2024 to distribute as microgrants to fund youth-led climate initiatives ranging from mobilizing tree planting to launching public education campaigns.

Over the last decade, local governments have played a critical role in climate mitigation and adaptation. Mesa is one of many cities taking proactive action and adopting a local ‘Climate Action Plan’ to protect the environment and natural resources responsibly.
