Mesa has received $3.1 million in federal funding to improve safety at several high‑traffic intersections for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program and will fund Mesa’s SafeTurn Initiative, which targets crash reduction at eight high‑risk intersections across the city, according to a press release.
The project will upgrade traffic signals to include protected‑only left‑turn green arrows, requiring drivers to turn only when oncoming traffic is stopped. Planned improvements also include high‑visibility crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act‑compliant sidewalk ramps, and new traffic cameras and sensors.
Improvements are planned at the following intersections:
• Brown Road at Gilbert Road, Higley Road and Val Vista Drive
• University Drive at Lindsay Road and Higley Road
• McKellips Road and Recker Road
• Broadway Road and Lindsay Road
• Baseline Road and Ellsworth Road
The locations were identified in Mesa’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, adopted by the City Council on May 19, 2025. The plan called for safety improvements at 13 intersections; five have already been funded, and the new grant will support work at the remaining eight.
City officials have said the effort supports Mesa’s goal of reducing traffic‑related fatalities and serious injuries by 30% by 2030.
