Abrazo Scottsdale Campus has added two new Mako SmartRobotics orthopedic systems to its surgical offerings, enhancing joint replacement procedures with advanced technology.

The $1.5 million investment will allow surgeons to perform total knee, partial knee, total hip and revision hip surgeries, with total shoulder procedures expected to be added next year, according to a press release.

The robotic systems assist surgeons in planning and executing procedures with greater precision, which may result in less pain and faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

Dr. Russell Cohen, an orthopedic surgeon with Arizona Sports Medicine Center, will perform the first Mako total knee replacement surgery at Abrazo Scottsdale on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

“Abrazo Scottsdale was asked to be part of what’s called a limited market release to perform Mako total knee replacement surgery,” said Dr. Cohen. “I have been working to help improve the flow for surgeons during surgery and to develop the customizable part of the procedure that Mako brings to the operating room.”

According to the release, total knee replacements in the United States are projected to increase by 85% between 2020 and 2030. However, studies have shown that approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery.

“These robots allow us to expand our services at Abrazo Scottsdale by doing revisions of not only total hip, but knee and shoulder,” said Mr. Ruben Castro, CEO of Abrazo Scottsdale Campus. “These innovative platforms can now remove and replace old hardware with extreme accuracy and a more predictable outcome, and transform procedures that used to be open.”

“We are proud to offer this highly advanced Mako 4 technology to our patients,” Mr. Castro added. “This addition to our orthopedic services further demonstrates our commitment to provide the community with sophisticated healthcare options and outcomes.”
