Ride or walk along the newly installed winning designs from the second annual “Bikes to Books” contest a celebration of the power of art, reading and community.
Mesa’s youth have once again showcased their creative talent, turning bicycle symbols into vibrant canvases of imagination, according to city officials.
This year’s winning artwork features everything from a cool turtle to a fire-breathing dragon and the beautiful views of the desert landscape each representing a unique vision of a young local artist.
The public can now view these winning designs in full display on the Stadium Connector Shared Use Path just north of Cinemark Theatre, 1051 N. Dobson Road at Mesa Riverview, just south of Rio Salado Parkway.
Mesa’s Transportation Departments striping crew brought the designs to life by using propane torches to heat and install the thermal plastic to the pathway.

With 150 amazing submissions from local young artists spanning three age categories (pre-k to 2nd grade, 3rd grade to 6th grade, and 7th to 12th grade), this year’s contest was full of creative energy.
While the grand prize winners’ artwork is now on display for the whole city to enjoy, the second- and third-place winners also rode off with great prizes, including gear from Mesa Public Library and Mesa’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program. Every finalist received a certificate signed by city officials celebrating their contribution to this event.
The public is invited to enjoy these whimsical works of art any time.
Also, check out a list of book recommendations handpicked by Mesa Public Library to complement each design. It’s the perfect way to combine two cherished activities — biking and reading — into one unforgettable adventure.
