Since its inception in 1964, UMOM New Day Centers continues to be a beacon of compassion and support for individuals and families facing the harsh realities of homelessness.

In celebration of 60 years of unwavering commitment to restoring hope, rebuilding lives, and continually addressing homelessness in Maricopa County, the organization is advancing their mission with multiple focus points throughout this celebratory year, according to a press release.

Today, the nonprofit provides safe shelter and supportive services for nearly 800 individuals every night, including 155 families and 130 single women, according to a press release.

With over 900 units of affordable housing strategically placed across the Valley, UMOM continues to pave the way toward a brighter, more stable future for countless individuals and families.

“Sixty years of service is a remarkable milestone, one that we are incredibly proud to celebrate,” says Jackson Fonder, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers. “Throughout the years, UMOM has remained steadfast in its mission to provide compassionate care and practical support to those experiencing homelessness while adjusting to the societal changes. As we reflect on our journey, we are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to make a meaningful and life-changing difference in the lives of so many.”

While the organization looks back at 60 years, the future vision is to expand across the Valley in 2024 and beyond through some key initiatives made possible by generous funding and key partnerships. Specifically, UMOM has witnessed a concerning trend of increasing family sizes and a growing need for shelter among multi-generational families.

To address this critical need, UMOM was awarded a $5 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund in November 2023, the release states.

This transformative grant enables UMOM to expand its emergency shelter space and implement innovative solutions to support larger families on their journey toward stability.

“Thanks to the generous support of the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund, UMOM is empowered to forge ahead in our mission with renewed vigor,” Mr. Fonder continued. “We are committed to leveraging this grant to create lasting change and ensure that we address the dire need in our community to place families of four or more in a safe shelter with resources to help them self-sustain after their stay with us.”

UMOM’s latest affordable housing community, La Esperanza Terrace, is set to open its doors in 2025, further expanding UMOM’s capacity to serve those in need.
