Leilani Bowers has been appointed to the Balsz School District Governing Board to serve through November of this year, which is due to her seat filling a vacancy of former board member Redeem Robinson.

“The Balsz Governing Board requested that our superintendent post the opening on our website and to inform parents of our students about the opportunity,” said Gail Knight, Balsz governing board president. “We were very pleased with the response from parents and even more when Steve Watson, Maricopa County School superintendent, informed us of the selection.”

Ms. Bowers can choose to run a campaign to be elected for a two-year term ending in 2024, Robinson’s original term, according to a press release.

“We are fortunate to have had several candidates that desired to become members of our Governing Board. Various members of our community including two families from our school district stepped up to the call to join our efforts to lead and we are excited that Miss Bowers was selected,” said Balsz School District Superintendent George Barnes, Ed.D., in a prepared statement.

“Newly elected Governing Board Member Leilani Bowers comes to us with strong community wisdom and the understanding of the difference a community makes as well as the potential power a school has as a driving force of change. Leilani’s own students are fortunate to have a role model for them and I am sure they are proud. Equally as important, all of our students can see more representation of themselves on our Governing Board who will offer their leadership and support.”

A three-year resident of Arizona, Ms. Bowers said her vision is set the same as any servant leaders’ would.

“[My] vision for the district and myself is the same, to be a servant leader to my community and to work as a team to invest back in our children,” she said.

Ms. Bowers works in the service/training department for a major hardware retailer, and has previously worked as a behavioral therapist and case manager, the release states.

Balsz School District offices are at 4825 E. Roosevelt St. in Phoenix.
