In celebration of Earth Day, Intel Corp. and Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology, collected 3,515 pounds of recycled technology at Chandler Fashion Center.
The technology drive was in collaboration with Macerich, the owner of Chandler Fashion Center, and various malls across the country, according to a press release.
“AZ StRUT is incredibly grateful to Intel and for each and every person who contributed their old technology for recycling instead of throwing it in the dumpster,” said Tom Mehlert, executive director at AZ StRUT, in a prepared statement. “With the power of our community and Intel and Macerich’s support, we will be able to continue our mission to help educate and empower students to pursue a career in STEAM.”
With local technology drives powered by companies like Intel and Macerich, AZ StRUT can sort the donated electronics and identify if the equipment should be reused, recycled, or refurbished, ultimately redirecting the electronics from landfills.
“Intel’s success depends on the health of our communities, and collaborating with AZ StRUT to benefit our students and help educate the community is something we take to heart,” said Liz Shipley, Intel Arizona public affairs director. “Each donation not only helps our planet but also adds up to helping hundreds of students succeed in and out of the classroom, equipping them with the right tools to learn and excel in and out of the classroom.”

As a thank you for their support, the first 100 donors to drop off a technology donation at the drive received a $10 SCHEELS gift card. Additionally, to bridge the technology gap and address the critical need for laptops, the first 50 people who donated old laptops received a $20 SCHEELS gift card and two tickets to the Crayola Experience courtesy of Chandler Fashion Center.
“The Chandler Fashion Center has transformed into a hub for people to gather within the community. Uniting people with a comfortable space with vast shopping, dining, and entertainment options has been at the center of our efforts” said Dana Schiemann, senior marketing manager at Macerich. “Our team is proud to partner with AZ StRUT and Intel to promote sustainable practices within the Chandler community.”
In the last three years, Intel and AZ StRUT have collected more than 25,000 pounds of personal electronics, the release states.
