Despite tribulations, Chesapeake Bay Bistro is persevering

Tempe-based Chesapeake Bay Bistro closed its Tempe Food Court ghost kitchen recently but the beloved restaurant will continue bringing fresh seafood to loyal patrons through a new catering arm.
James and Yolanda Brown opened their brick-and-mortar location in May 2021 in Ahwatukee, and added the Tempe location last fall, according to a press release.
However, Yolanda suffered serious health issues in October 2022. In addition to helping Yolanda with her medical needs, James said they faced the same staffing challenges many small businesses, particularly in the hospitality industry, are facing.
“It just wasn’t possible to continue,” Mr. Brown said in the release. “I couldn’t be at both restaurants and at home with Yolanda.”
To the dismay of all who’ve enjoyed their blue crabs and other seafood specialties, they closed their Ahwatukee location in January, and then the Tempe ghost kitchen, which focused mainly on takeout and delivery, at the end of February.
“This isn’t goodbye,” Mr. Brown pointed out. “We’re switching to catering to focus on getting Yolanda back to health, which allows me to plan cooking in advance.”
This month, James said he will be updating the website so catering orders can be placed there. Menu options include a variety of fish and shellfish in preparations including fried, grilled or in salads and tacos. Side possibilities include classics such as hush puppies, crab cakes and French fries.
