Many local shelters are currently in crisis as most of them are at full capacity or are almost there.
To encourage pet adoption, the Arizona Animal Welfare League, which is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in Arizona, offers a special event this month.
Now through Sunday, July 31, all cats and dogs ages 1 year and up at AAWL’s main shelter, 25 N. 40th St. in Phoenix, will have sponsored adoption fees, thanks to the BISSELL Pet Foundation.
That means interested individuals and families can take home a new best friend for FREE!
The “Empty the Shelters” event has helped 96,068 pets find homes in the United States and Canada since its inception in 2016, according to AAWL.
AAWL is Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter. A “no-kill” shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety, according to the AAWL website.
Officials at the AAWL rescue report the effort rehabilitates and rehomes more than 4,000 cats and dogs every year, in addition to low-cost services for pet owners and opportunities volunteer service and foster parenting.
