Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting millions of Americans. Left untreated, Afib increases a patient’s risk of stroke, heart failure, and can increase mortality.
September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month and doctors at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital are now using artificial intelligence to improve heart health, representatives of Abrazo Health tell the Digital Free Press.
“We are achieving higher success in the treatment of atrial fibrillation at the advent of artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art procedures considered major advances in the treatments of cardiac arrhythmias and we are consistently becoming safer and more successful,” said Dr. Marwan Bahu of Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, in a prepared statement.
Electrophysiologists are doctors who specialize in the heart’s electrical system, Abrazo Health officials say. They diagnose and treat patients with electrical problems in the heart, which often lead to heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias) that cause Afib.
Artificial intelligence allows doctors to identify, in real time, irregular heart activity and to diagnose and treat with amazing new immediacy and accuracy, Abrazo Health officials say.
“During atrial fibrillation, the electrical activity in the atria (upper chambers of the heart) is chaotic and disorganized, so the atria quiver instead of contract. Blood tends to pool, which can form clots that break off and go to the brain causing a stroke,” Dr. Bahu said. “Also, electrical signals that reach the ventricles (bottom chambers of the heart that do most of the pumping) can be too fast, too slow, or irregular, which makes the heart a less efficient pump.”
Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital offers advanced treatments for Afib and other arrhythmias with much desired minimally invasive procedures that provide patients with treatment options that restore normal heart rhythm and eliminate the need for continuous medication.
